The year’s World Health Day is focusing on mental health, particularly depression. It aims to raise awareness and break down the stigma. The Big Day Off collaborates with Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) and SpinalCure Australia (SCA) to prioritise healthy living as one of our core goals. SCIA offers a variety of services to help those affected by a spinal cord injury such as counselling, peer support and NeuroMoves exercise services.
SCIA piloted a counselling service for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and their immediate friends and family in a safe, respectful and supported place to discuss concerns, worries and stresses in complete confidence.
SCIA’s peer support is a non-clinical service is run by a dedicated team of people that have spinal cord injuries. They promote independence and social participation through various programs such as running education sessions at the spinal units in hospitals and sharing invaluable life experiences. Additionally, they run workshops to demonstrate tools and equipment that will assist in independence.
NeuroMoves is an exercise service, which provides programs for people with neurological condition or other physical disabilities. With a committed and experienced team of exercise physiologists and physiotherapists, NeuroMoves decrease barriers that arise for people with a disability.
Funding is vital for these wonderful services to continue. Find out how you can win a day off and help better the lives of people with spinal cord injuries.
