Part 3/3: So often the cause was a simple misstep, or a car accident or sports injury and it often occurred while people were doing what they loved and fate intervened. Many years ago I had a chance meeting with Gary Allsop, injured in an AFL footy game and is now a wheelchair user. He reached out to me from Melbourne and asked me to come and host a fundraising function for him. I was so touched by his kindness and gratitude and how honest he was with me about the impact spinal cord injury has had on his life and his family’s. We have become lifelong friends. Part 2/3: It’s about genuine compassion and kindness for others and your community that counts, and once you stop thinking about your own issues, you gain perspective and become very grateful for what you have. Doing something for someone else, without expecting anything in return, grounds you and reminds you of what’s important in life.

Part 1/3: It all started for me when I was at university decades ago while doing some intern work with disabled kids. I just couldn’t believe the heartbreaking and profound life-changing impact of spinal cord injury on not just those who experience it, but also on their family and friends. I have spent my life being active and healthy and I simply couldn’t imagine not being able to move.I have the greatest empathy, respect and compassion for those struggling with spinal cord injury, as they are so often reliant on their loved ones to help them live with dignity.
